Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A gray electrical panel box mounted on a concrete block basement wall, with a wooden shelf holding empty glass jars and cardboard boxes to the left and galvanized metal ductwork running along the right side.

Ductwork and electrical service laid into a house at the time of its construction get sized for what was running then, and in much of Dundy County that is a long way from what a water heater contractor brings in today. Half the homes in Dundy County, Nebraska were built in 1948 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That gap is where the real scope of an installation job comes from. A contractor opening up the space may find that the existing electrical panel cannot support the new unit's draw without an upgrade, and that assessment drives the quote as much as the equipment itself does.

What a Water Heater Installation Covers

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house with a dark shingled roof, showing interior rooms with a sofa, chair, bed, sink and cabinet, and a cylindrical tank with a flue pipe extending through the roof.

The tank is the piece most homeowners recognize: a tall insulated cylinder, usually standing in a utility room, basement, or garage, that holds and heats a supply of water ready for use. A gas unit has a burner assembly at its base and a flue running up through the center. An electric unit carries heating elements mounted inside the tank wall.

A cold-water supply line feeds into the top of the tank, and a hot-water outlet line runs out from the same area to serve the rest of the house. A pressure relief valve mounts on the side of the tank and connects to a short discharge pipe that terminates near the floor. A drain valve sits at the base, and the unit ties into either a gas line or a dedicated electrical circuit depending on type.

The drawing shows the general layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to the setup in your house.
